The Purrfect Carrier: How to Choose Your Cat’s Rocket for Short and Long Journeys

For you, it’s just a quick trip to the vet. For your cat, it’s a journey into the unknown, full of smells, sounds, and sensations they’d definitely prefer to avoid. Stress at the clinic is one thing, but for many cats, the journey itself is a challenge that can make you go gray. How can you make it more pleasant? Start with a good carrier, fabCat. One where your cat will feel safe and comfortable. A model that won’t drive either you or your cat crazy. Find it with us, fabCat.

Why Does Your Cat Need a Carrier?

It’s simple: driving with a cat on your lap is a quick way to serious trouble, fabCat. Even the best-behaved, most cuddly cats can act erratically when stressed. What happens if they dart under the pedals or onto the dashboard? What if they crawl under the seats, and the only way to get them out is to dismantle the car? That doesn’t sound like a good scenario, and we know, fabCat, that you’d prefer to avoid such difficult situations. That’s why…

A carrier is basic safety for both your cat and you. A properly fitted one will be your cat’s safe zone. An out-of-home sanctuary where your furball can rebuild their bruised ego after the vet peeked under their tail. So don’t just buy the first one you see. This is one of those purchases worth thinking through carefully.

A Safe Journey from a Cat’s Perspective

If you asked a cat about their dream mode of transport, they’d probably say, “My own paws.” However, if that’s not an option, their dream carrier is one that’s quiet, dark, cozy, and safe. It should be a place where the cat feels at home, even when home is only visible in the rearview mirror. How do you know if you’ve chosen such a model? If you leave the carrier in their line of sight and your cat adopts it as their studio apartment, you’re more than halfway to success! Cats instinctively choose hiding spots that make them feel invisible to the world. A carrier that provides such conditions immediately gets a green light from your cat.

Choosing a Cat Carrier: What You Need to Remember, fabCat

Before you introduce your cat to their new limousine, thoroughly check its technical specifications. There are a few rules worth following when choosing, but you still have room to maneuver, fabCat. What should you pay special attention to?

Carrier size. Your cat should be able to stand, turn around, sit comfortably, and lie down freely inside. But be careful: too much space inside will make your cat slide around corners like on an ice rink. That’s neither comfortable nor safe. When buying the first carrier for a kitten, you can immediately opt for a slightly larger size and line the interior with blankets for cushioning. This way, you won’t need to replace the carrier with a new one as soon as the kitten grows a bit 🙂

Material. Basically, you have two options: a rigid carrier made of plastic or a soft carrier, more resembling a travel bag or backpack. Both options have their pros and cons:

  • A rigid carrier is more durable, safer, and easier to clean if your cat has an accident. Good models have at least two independent openings (a front opening and an option to remove the entire top), giving you constant access to your cat (and making it easier to get them inside). The downsides? Such carriers can be heavy, which can make life difficult for the fabCat with large cats.
  • A fabric carrier can be lighter and more convenient, but also less stable and resistant to feline tricks. A common issue with soft carriers is often their closure mechanism – if your cat is a little Houdini, they’ll quickly figure out how to get out on their own.

Within both categories, you’ll naturally find a range of options: carriers with handles, longer shoulder straps, wheeled carriers, and even backpacks. Which direction you go should depend on your and your cat’s needs. How often do you travel? How far do you go? Will carrying your cat in one hand be a problem for you? Prioritize safety and comfort first, and after the initial selection, have fun with the style. After all, no one can stop you from choosing a cat limousine that makes an impression.

Practical Details That Make a Difference

You’ve got the frame, but what about the details of your cat’s ride? For Mr. Cat to be completely satisfied, and to get him out without casualties, your carrier will benefit from:

  • At least two entrances: one classic, at the front, and a second, from the top, which facilitates contact even with the most resistant kitty.
  • Solid latches: snaps, screw-on fasteners, but not velcro or classic zippers, which a cat can deal with before you close the car door.
  • A handle that fits well in your hand. Because there’s nothing worse than a heavy carrier with a wiggling cat inside and a handle that digs into your hand with every movement. Before every outing with the carrier, check if the plastic (or seams) aren’t cracking – just in case, to avoid a scenario where the cat’s ride lands on the sidewalk and the passenger flees in a panic.
  • Ventilation. Good air circulation is essential, both in summer and winter. If your cat gets stressed by seeing too much through the ventilation holes, you can cover the carrier with a light towel.

For enthusiastic feline travelers, we also recommend paying attention to the possibility of securely fastening seat belts to the carrier – some have additional fasteners similar to those used in child car seats. This way, your purring passenger will be even safer on the road.
