Today, to celebrate International Dog Day, we’re exploring practical tips for a happy cat-dog life. Are you with us, fabCat?

Cat and dog living together – what determines success?

Friendship between a cat and a dog is no myth, but you won’t achieve it by simply throwing them into one room without preparation. In this mix, everything matters: both pets’ personalities, past experiences, and even their age. A cat who has ruled the home jungle for years may not be thrilled about a playful puppy suddenly barging in. Similarly, a dog who’s always chased cats on the block won’t immediately understand that the new furry housemate is a friend, not a living toy.

Looking for a golden recipe for cat and dog living together? Well, there isn’t one, fabCat. Before making a decision, weigh the pros and cons, analyze your pet’s character, habits, and needs, and find a companion they can truly get along with. Remember – you can always talk to a breeder or a behaviorist, who will help you make the right choice.

How to introduce a cat to a dog step by step

No matter who came first, introducing a new pet is always a bit of a revolution. The golden rule? Give both sides a sense of safety.

Cats need access to high ground, shelves, or other safe hideouts where no one will disturb them. This gives them a sense of control and calm, allowing them to choose when to approach the newcomer. Dogs, on the other hand, need clear rules and familiar commands to help you manage their emotions. This way, you’ll avoid sudden chases and stressful encounters.

Introduce them step by step:

  • Isolation and scent swapping – let pets get used to each other’s scent through toys, blankets, or bedding.
  • First eye contact – observe their reactions and make sure neither feels threatened.
  • Short meetings with your supervision – guide the interactions, intervene if one crosses the other’s boundaries, but don’t force contact.

Remember: building trust takes time. Some duos bond almost instantly, others need weeks or even months. That’s perfectly normal. Let them find their rhythm – cats often need more personal space, dogs more shared activity. Patience is key, fabCat, and success depends on your consistency, attentiveness, and respect for each pet’s individuality.

Territory goals: creating a dog-and-cat-friendly home

Now we’re moving on to one of our favorite topics – interior design for pets.

Beds are the easiest place to start. On our PADI and EMI cushions, both cats and dogs – even the bigger ones – love to lounge. The OTI bed is a bit more of a challenge, but we’ve seen many pups nap there happily. Scratchers? Ours are horizontal, perfect for scratching and lounging alike! LUI might give in under the weight of a large dog, but VIGO handles extra loads without trouble.

PS If your dog enjoys sprawling on cat cushions or scratchers, consider expanding your collection at home, so no one feels kicked off their favorite spot.

Toys, litter box, and mealtime zones need a bit more planning, but you’ve got this, fabCat.

  • After playtime with your cat, always put away balls, wands, and small toys. Many are too tiny for dogs and could end up in their stomach.
  • A litter box is a cat’s sacred safe zone – make sure your dog can’t access it. That way, your cat will always feel secure where it matters most.
  • Cats and dogs shouldn’t eat side by side. Their dietary needs differ, and worrying about stolen food doesn’t help digestion. A good strategy? Feed your cat on higher ground, your dog on the floor, or even place bowls in separate rooms. When they’re done, put the bowls away – problem solved.

By following these simple rules, your home will become a safe, comfortable space for both dog and cat – and you’ll enjoy peace of mind knowing everyone has their place.

Cat and dog duo – harmony or chaos?

With the right preparation and personality match, you have a great chance at harmony. Your cat may gain a nap buddy, and your dog a playmate. Cat and dog living together works best with patience and respect for boundaries – that’s the foundation for an extraordinary bond.
